Money Pizza

pizza

Money Pizza is an promotional concept for an imaginary pizza chain that sells a $5 pizza. The magnetic fridge-based coin keeper holds $5 in change. As its creator, artist Matt Brown, says, “The concept eliminates the shame people feel when they pay for something all in change. No counting involved with this, both cashier and customer know exactly how much money there is on that pie.”

If I owned a pizza place, I would definitely use this. (via Slice)

Simple Pasta

I rarely make up my own recipes, but tonight we had enough stuff laying around the kitchen that I out together a pasta that turned out really good.

Recipe:

  • First I diced a shallot and cooked it in olive oil and butter until it was soft.
  • Added 1 clove of garlic and cooked for about 1 minute.
  • Poured in about a cup of chicken stock and let it reduce over medium heat for about 6 minutes.
  • Added some shrimp.
  • Seasoned with salt, pepper, crushed red pepper.
  • Added pasta (I had spaghetti on hand) and some pasta water to the pan.
  • Let it go for a couple minutes then added bread crumbs and parmesan.

How Frozen Pizzas Are Made

BBC has a suprisingly fascinating video of a frozen pizza factory. I could watch the sauce machine for hours.

Broccoli with Cheetos

Broccoli with Cheetos

New York Magazine has a video featuring the head chef at Park Avenue Autumn in New York showing how he makes his popular Broccoli with Cheetos side dish. He says it’s their most popular side dish, outselling french fries. I made it over the weekend and I have to say, it is really good. In terms of healthy eating, the Cheetos were not the part of the recipe that made me feel the most guilty — it was the cheese sauce with a quart of heavy cream in it.

Pacific Rim Glazed Flank Steak

Pacific Rim Glazed Flank Steak

Serious Eats has a great recipe for an asian-inspired flank steak. This marks the first time I have cooked flank steak and had it actually taste good.  The marinade works well mixed in with rice as well.

Discontinued McDonald’s Products

Wikipedia lists McDonald’s discontinued menu items. I remember quite a few of these, including the Arch Burger, the McDLT, Salad Shakers, and the McLean Deluxe. I was more intrigued by the items I don’t remember:

  • McStuffin - a pocket sandwich available with various fillings
  • McFeast: A hamburger with a slice of ham and cheese
  • Chicken Platter - A grilled chicken burger served with lettuce and tomato on the HotCakes tray.
  • Beef Wennington - A burger solely offered in the Chicago area in the late 1990s, named after former Chicago Bulls player Bill Wennington. It featured a single patty topped with cheese, onions, barbecue sauce and a slice of Canadian bacon, as a tribute to Wennington’s Canadian background.

Wake N’ Bacon

Wake N Bacon Alarm Clock

Behold the Wake N’ Bacon alarm clock. You put a frozen slice of bacon in the clock the night before, set your alarm, and wake up the next morning to the delicious scent of bacon.  This is good idea although I probably like bacon as much in my sleep as I do when I am awake. I could easily see myself grabbing the bacon and falling back to sleep immediately. (via Serious Eats)
